One of the most sustainable choices we make is to use leftover or rejected fabrics and give them a new life. When visiting our suppliers in India, we love to go through the fabrics that others have rejected and be inspired to use them in our collections. Yet another way of helping to reduce the production of raw materials and thus the environmental impact.
Linen is a very earth-friendly fiber thanks to the Flax plant from which the fiber derives from. The Flax plant is an inherently eco-friendly crop as it is a sturdy and pest-resistant plant with low environmental impact. The properties of linen are many. It is a strong fabric, breathable and absorbs moisture well without feeling damp. In warm weather linen fabric is even able to cool the skin, making linen products extremely comfortable during summer. As with organic cotton, linen is the obvious and perfect choice for a sustainable material.
At Skall Studio we only use organic cotton as we wish to support cotton cultivation without the use of harmful chemicals, synthetic fertilizers or other soil additives. This is our way to respect the environment and the people involved in the processes. The characteristics of organic cotton are the same or even better than those of conventional cotton. For this reason, organic cotton has always been an obvious choice for us.
Since we launched our first collection in 2015, our knitwear has been made in Denmark. We love the beauty of pure and natural wool, and the amazing benefits of not only keeping us warm, but also being a sustainable material that can last a lifetime. The idea of making knitwear in Denmark came from our values for animal welfare. To be able to know for sure that the sheep is treated with care and respect. And to secure transparency by using local production facilities, which is why we feel good about making knitwear in wool.
Skall Studio use peace silk from India. Peace silk is made without harming the silkworms. When the worm has turned into a butterfly and has left the cocoon and therefore no longer needs it, the threads are unwound from the cocoon and made into silk fabric. The production of peace silk is a cruelty free method that allows us to enjoy the beauty and the many properties of silk fabric, without harming the animals. Silk fabric is very comfortable. Light but still with strong insulation properties - warm in winter and cool in summer. And with such natural functional properties and classic beauty, silk is an outstanding material for sustainable design.
